Relaxing in Fiji

Between leaving Taipei and landing in Nadi, I took ten flights across five countries and a US territory. It was a great trip across some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, but it was also a lot of places that have little to no tourist infrastructure. So it was nice landing in Nadi and having more development all around.

The first night, we went out for dinner and drinks, and tried kava, which is a cultural tradition in Fiji. I thought it was slightly better than everyone had told me it was, but I wouldn’t necessarily seek it out again.

The next day, I went exploring with a few friends! We took a cab out to the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, which is the largest Hindu temple in the Pacific. It was beautiful. They were in the process of repainting it, which was interesting to see. The difference in color of the new painting compared to the section that had faded was very stark. We weren’t allowed to take pictures of the interior, but I would definitely recommend a visit if you’re in Nadi.

They had us borrow extra garments to ensure our knees were covered, which did lead to one of my favorite signs of the trip asking us to maintain a “descent” dress code. From the temple, we walked into town to go to the local handicraft market and get lunch. There isn’t a lot to do for tourists in Nadi, as most people who come to Fiji are coming for the resorts and the beaches, but it was enough to keep us occupied for the day.

After our time in the town, it was time for a hotel splurge! I was staying at the Crowne Plaza in Nadi. I had paid a little extra to have pool access from my room, which was an amazing experience.

It was so relaxing to spend a couple days sleeping in, swimming in the pool, and walking along the beach. I completely understand why Fiji is so popular as a vacation destination – I could see myself doing this exact same stopover if I end up transiting through Fiji in the future!
